Record number of property completions for Essex law firm

The property team at Essex law firm Birkett Long saw a record number of completions at the end of March, as landlords and second homebuyers rushed to beat the Stamp Duty surcharge, which came into force on 1 April.

Those buying a second home now pay a 3% higher rate of Stamp Duty, and in the last three working days of March the property team at Birkett Long saw approximately 70 completions. By comparison the total for the whole of March 2015 was 92.

Lorna joins Birkett Long team

Solicitor Lorna Boorman has just joined Essex law firm Birkett Longand one of the largest teams of lawyers helping people put their affairs in order. 

The 28-year-old, who is also a keen photographer, studied law at Anglia Ruskin in 2006 and qualified as a solicitor in 2013. She works in the firm’s wills, trusts and probate team and says a legal career was always going to be on the cards for her.

The Colchester office of the firm agreed to join the Charity’s scheme whereby they waived their fee for straightforward Wills in return for a suggested donation of £85 from the client for one Will and £150 for two.

New museum launched at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome

Volunteers and staff at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, near Maldon in Essex, have been working hard to create a new museum, which will be first showcased to the public on Good Friday.

Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome was established in 1916 as the base of the Royal Flying Corps 37 (Home Defence) Squadron, two years after the First World War began, and the new museum will give an insight into life on the aerodrome.

A solicitor with Essex law firm Birkett Long is warning that some bereaved families face huge increases in probate fees if the government gets its way in order to give the courts system a cash injection, advising that if the government pushes ahead after the consultation period, ending on 1 April, the charges will mean that estates worth £2 million will attract a fee of £20,000.

Two more planes to be displayed at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome

Pilot Tony Bianchi, who has flown planes in films such as Indiana Jones and The Mummy series, has loaned two planes from his collection to be on display at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, one of which appeared in 1975 film ‘The Great Waldo Pepper’.  

Tony has shown his support for the WW1 site’s ongoing refurbishment, by loaning a Sopwith Camel, which appeared in the 1975 film, and a Fokker Eindecker, for the public to enjoy.

Replica WW1 aeroplane on show at Southend Library

A replica WW1 Sopwith Pup aeroplane, which was restored using a £5,000 grant from Southend Council, is now on show at Southend Library as part of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome’s exciting centenary commemorations.  Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, near Maldon in Essex, was established in 1916 as the base of the Royal Flying Corps 37 (Home Defence) Squadron, two years after the First World War began. It is now open to the public and is considered unique as no other near-complete World War One aerodrome remains in England.

Colchester couple help raise £57,000 on epic bike ride

A Colchester-based charity has raised more than £57,000 after an epic cycle ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Sixteen people set out on the 1,114 mile ride in aid of the Rob George Foundation, which was set up in memory of a former Colchester Royal Grammar pupil who died of leukaemia aged 21 in December 2013.

An 'Armed Forces' day held at The New Deanery residential care home in Bocking near Braintree helped residents to reminisce while allowing friends and families to share a special day with their loved ones.

Residents enjoyed the secure 10 acre gardens which are now in full bloom, admiring a World War II tank, which had been brought along to add to the ambience. An air raid hut, complete with contents, a wartime 750cc BMW flathead motorbike, which would have been used to escort the tanks during the war, and staff in costume completed the theme.

Chelmer Village mother-of-two Maxine Allen is a stone lighter and fitter than she’s ever been thanks to her epic 1,114 mile, 17-day charity bike ride from John O’Groats to Land’s End.

Superb £53,000 raised on charity bike ride for Magic Moments

Simply magic! A team of 46 cyclists have helped to raise a staggering £53,000 for the Colchester-based Magic Moments children’s charity, after riding the gruelling 56 miles from London to Brighton.

The group set off in glorious weather from Tower Bridge in London on Saturday (11th July), riding across the hilly South Downs, reaching Brighton Pier after hours of strenuous pedalling.
