As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, Mosaic is proud to support the launch of Essex Wildlife Trust’s Carbon Coast Collective – a pioneering coastal restoration project that aims to protect and regenerate Essex’s vital marine and estuarine habitats.
The initiative reflects our core values as a B Corp certified communications agency, committed to using business as a force for good and a voice for nature.
The Carbon Coast Collective – protecting and restoring Essex’s unique coastline
The Carbon Coast Collective is a bold new conservation programme focused on protecting and restoring four crucial blue carbon habitats:
- Saltmarsh
- Seagrass meadows
- Native oyster beds
- Shingle beaches
These ecosystems are essential to tackling climate change. They help store carbon, support biodiversity and improve water quality.
For example, seagrass meadows can absorb up to two tonnes of CO₂ per hectare each year, while a single oyster can filter up to 200 litres of water daily.
However, many of these habitats are in decline. Essex is home to 30% of the UK’s saltmarsh, yet we are losing around 100 hectares each year.
The Carbon Coast Collective seeks to reverse this trend by restoring the natural defences that combat climate change, boost marine life and protect vulnerable coastal communities.
Why this matters – five key facts
- 30% of the UK’s saltmarsh is located in Essex
- The UK loses around 100 hectares of saltmarsh annually
- 1 oyster can clean up to 200 litres of water a day
- 1 hectare of seagrass stores up to 2 tonnes of CO₂ annually
- The UK has lost over half of its seagrass meadows in 50 years
These facts highlight the urgent need for co-ordinated action. That’s why the Carbon Coast Collective is calling on businesses, communities and organisations to work together to create a more climate-resilient future for Essex and beyond.
Rich Yates, CEO of Essex Wildlife Trust, said: “Essex’s coastline is one of the most precious and powerful natural assets in the UK. It supports rich biodiversity, strengthens our resilience to climate change and offers immense value to both people and wildlife.
“We have a unique opportunity and responsibility to protect it for future generations, and the Carbon Coast Collective is our call to local businesses to be part of something bigger – a bold and collaborative movement to restore the wild, rebuild vital habitats and help shape a thriving, nature-rich future for our coastal communities.”
Join us at the launch – Abberton Reservoir, 3rd July
We’re proud to be co-hosting the launch event on Thursday 3rd July, from 6.30pm to 8.30pm, at Abberton Reservoir Nature Discovery Park.
